EAST PATCHOGUE, NY — The Town of Brookhaven board voted unanimously to approve the application to open a 7-Eleven at the site of a former diner in East Patchogue. The convenience store is looking to close a nearby location and reopen at the site of the Island Grill diner on Hospital Road.

The diner has been closed and abandoned for the past 10 years. Alfred L. Amato, an attorney representing 7-Eleven, said the site is currently in unsafe condition, has sustained fire damaged and has attracted people to live inside the diner.

"We believe this is a tremendous blight to the community," Amato said during the board meeting earlier this month.

The property, which was previously zoned partially for diner use and partially for professional office use, will house the new 7-Eleven along with several gas pumps.

In the beginning of the meeting, officials say that Long Island Community Hospital sent a letter objecting to the application, but Amato says he has been in talks with hospital officials.
