Foraging is about much more than edible plants — it’s a way of seeing the world with greater awareness and appreciation for the resources all around us. In this immersive outdoor workshop, you’ll learn to recognize the many forms of nourishment nature provides: food, medicine, fuel, and material for craft and comfort.
Participants will join a guided walk through local habitats to identify seasonal edible and useful plants, explore safe and ethical harvesting practices, and discuss how Indigenous and ancient cultures developed deep relationships with the land through careful observation and stewardship. Along the way, you’ll prepare a simple tea or snack from gathered ingredients, connecting the experience of learning to the sensory richness of nature itself.
No prior experience is needed — just curiosity, respect for nature, and a willingness to look a little closer at the world around you.

The places where land and water meet are some of the most dynamic environments on Long Island. A single walk can take you through woodland, wetland, river corridor, and shoreline, each shaped by different forces and supporting different forms of life.<a href="https://app.marketmuscles.com/events/fc6c3ffa-bda1-4430-92cb-6c4d91d1ef1c/miracle-mile-july-12-terrell-river" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener"><img src="https://forgottenskillz.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/08/Register-Now-300x88.png" alt="Register Now"></a>
Join us for a Miracle Mile Walk, a guided foraging and trail study experience through Terrell River County Park in Center Moriches. As we travel through the park, we’ll explore a variety of habitats, following the Terrell River through its riparian corridor before reaching the shores of Moriches Bay.
Along the way, we will explore:
<ul><li>Edible and usable plants found in diverse habitats</li><li>The role of rivers and wetlands in shaping the landscape</li><li>Animal sign and wildlife activity</li><li>Natural materials and resources available throughout the seasons</li><li>The transition zones between woodland, freshwater, and coastal ecosystems</li></ul>
This walk continues the practice of ground study; learning a place through observation, interaction, and repeated visits over time. Participants are encouraged to take notes, sketch, photograph, or simply track what they notice as they build their own Miracle Mile.
We’ll also discuss simple tools and apps that can support identification and field observation while emphasizing the value of firsthand experience and careful attention.
This experience is guided, safe, and beginner-friendly. No experience is needed.
Whether you’re interested in foraging, ecology, journaling, photography, wildlife, or simply spending time outdoors, this walk offers an opportunity to slow down, notice more, and experience one of Long Island’s most diverse coastal landscapes from a new perspective.
