LOCAL GROUP HONORS CIVIL WAR VETERANS ON JUNETEENTH
On June 19, 2026, the Society of the Grand Army of the Republic (SoGAR) will continue its tradition of honoring Civil War veterans by conducting its fifth Juneteenth Commemoration Ceremony at the Citizen Soldier GAR statue on Baker Street in Patchogue at 9:30 AM and, later, convening to dedicate the headstone of Civil War veteran Abraham Tobias at Old Bethel Cemetery, at the corner of Christian Ave. and Woodfield Road, Stony Brook, New York.
SoGAR has held Juneteenth commemoration ceremonies since 2021, when Juneteenth became a federal holiday. Their traditional ceremony at the Citizen Soldier GAR statue features a reading of General Order No. 3. The ceremony in Stony Brook honoring Corporal Abraham Tobias will include a wreath-laying to honor his service to the nation. Members of the 67th New York Infantry Long Island Volunteers will serve as Honor Guard at both events, and the 6th New York Independent Battery will fire their cannon during the program. All are welcome to attend these events.
SoGAR is a historical, educational, and patriotic organization and a 501(c)3 charity founded in 2017 and dedicated to advancing an understanding of the Civil War. SoGAR is responsible for the restoration of the Civil War Monument on Baker Street in Patchogue and for the placement of historic roadside markers for Civil War patriots General Regis deTrobriand in Sayville and General Nathaniel McLean in Bellport. A fraternal society, SoGAR welcomes history enthusiasts of all ages as members. For more information, visit https://www.SoGAR.org.
