Child Hurt After Mother Impaired by Drugs Crashes Jeep in Suffolk County: Police

A 34-year-old woman faces a felony DWI charge after crash Saturday morning, police say.

MASTIC BEACH, NY - A 6-year-old was taken to the hospital and her mother was arrested for driving under the influence of drugs following a single-car crash in Mastic Beach Saturday morning, Suffolk Police said. 

According to police, 34-year-old Stephanie Warner was driving a 2004 Jeep Cherokee north on Market Street when she lost control of the vehicle and struck a tree on the west side of the street, north of Wavecrest Drive, at about 9:15 a.m.

Warner’s 6-year-old daughter, a passenger in the Jeep, was transported to Brookhaven Memorial Hospital Medical Center in East Patchogue with minor injuries. Warner was not injured.

Warner was charged with aggravated DWI with a child passenger 15 years old or younger–a felony under Leandra’s Law–and endangering the welfare of a child.

Warner was held overnight at the Fourth Precinct and was scheduled to be arraigned at First District Court in Central Islip Saturday.

The Jeep was impounded and the investigation is continuing. Police are asking anyone with information on the crash to call the Seventh Squad at 631-852-8752.
