Cop Uses Narcan To Save Man Who Overdosed, Crashed Pickup Truck On Sunrise Highway: Police

BREAKING: The officer needed to break a window and pull the unconscious man from the vehicle Monday afternoon, police say.

PATCHOGUE, NY – A Suffolk Police officer likely saved the life of a man who was allegedly high on drugs when he crashed his pickup truck on Sunrise Highway Monday afternoon.

According to police, 49-year-old Anthony Longo, of Holbrook, was driving a 2009 Ford F-150 west on Sunrise Highway when the vehicle left the roadway and entered a wooded area on the north side of the road between exits 52 and 53 in Patchogue at about 4:55 p.m.

Highway Patrol Officer Thomas Joy witnessed the crash and observed Longo unconscious in the truck, police said. Joy, who was unable to get into the vehicle because the doors were locked, broke a window, and with the assistance of a passing motorist, pulled Longo from the vehicle.

Joy administrated intranasal Narcan to Longo, who then regained consciousness. Longo, of Spruce Drive, was transported to Brookhaven Memorial Hospital Medical Center in East Patchogue.

Longo was charged with driving while ability impaired by drugs. He will be arraigned on a later date.

Police did not specify what drug Longo is alleged to have been on, but Narcan only reverses opioid overdoses.
