The Col. Josiah Smith Chapter NSDAR and Captain Austin Roe Society N.S.C.A.R. honored local Revolutionary War Patriot Captain Austin Roe (1749-1830) by laying a wreath by his headstone at the Cedar Grove Cemetery in Patchogue. During his lifetime he welcomed guests at the Roe Hotel in Patchogue, ran a Tavern in Setauket, and served as a spy in the Culper Spy Ring for General Washington during the Revolutionary War. (He was known as Agent 724). General Washington's spy effort took up 25 percent of the war budget. Roe is described as having a friendly manner. He looked forward to meeting General Washington on the President's tour to personally find out about the effects of British occupation as well as thank those in service to the new America. He planned to meet Austin Roe on April 22, 1790. Unfortunately Austin Roe was unable to make his personal acquaintance when he fell from his horse and broke a leg. It is said that he had a limp the rest of his life due to this fall. I have been told that Captain Roe's son did serve the President a drink in his father's tavern.

The Daughters of the American Revolution has a mission to honor our Patriots from the Revolutionary War. A Patriot may have been a soldier, officer, supplied medical care, offered supplies, fed the soldiers, served as a spy, or paid taxes. Are you a direct descendant of a Revolutionary War Patriot? Men have a group called the Sons of the American Revolution. Women are welcome to join the Daughters of the American Revolution, Col. Josiah Smith Chapter, and Children are welcome to join the Captain Austin Roe Society. Please contact Regent Heidi Nathan-Barry at regentcol.josiahsmithdar@gmail.com
