New York State DAR 122nd State Conference in Rochester, NY

The National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution met for their 122nd State Conference in Rochester, New York. Patchogue's Col. Josiah Smith Chapter was represented by Regent Joan Nathan, Chaplain Heidi Nathan-Barry, and Historian Suzanne Griffing. Chaplain Heidi Nathan-Barry is a Junior Member. Junior members are young women in DAR between the ages of 18 and 35. Our Juniors accomplish much in our community from youth community service to outreach to Veterans and Service persons. The Col. Josiah Smith Chapter, led by our Chaplain, has adopted a Platoon who is currently deployed. The Plattoon requested letters- so our letter campaign is now active! Mrs. Nathan-Barry was honored as New York State's Outstanding Junior. The honor of Outstanding First Time Page at State was also conferred to Heidi Nathan-Barry. Congratulations Heidi!

DAR is a 501c3 non-profit group of women who are directly descended from a Revolutionary War Patriot. A Patriot may have been an officer, soldier, or individual who supported our country's fight for freedom. The American Revolution began in 1775 with the “shot heard round the world” which was fired at Lexington on April 19, 1775 and lasted eight and a half years. America delcared independence on July 4, 1776. The Battle of Brooklyn on August 27, 1776 was the first battle after this declaration. the American Revolution finally ended on September 3, 1783, with America and the King of England signing the Treaty of Paris. Long Island has much Revolutionary War History and it was under British Occupation and the Washington Spy Ring helped liberate win our independence!
