Honoring Documentary Filmmaker George Stoney

In conjunction with its first slate of classes this spring, The Plaza Media Arts Center will name one of its programs "The George Stoney School of Documentary Filmmaking,"honoring local veteran George Stoney's achievements and contributions to society. This program represents the convergence of journalism, social activism and the art of filmmaking.

After the reception George Stoney, who has made over 100 documentaries, will introduce one of his earlier films "All My Babies." In 2002 the Library of Congress deemed the film a "culturally, historically and artistically significant work" and included it in the National Film Registry.

This educational film from 1952 follows "Miss Mary" Coley, an African-American midwife in the South. It has become a classic as it documents midwifery practice and the living conditions of a cross section of African-Americans during that time.
