Homeless Man In Wheelchair Fatally Struck By Car: PD

The 62-year-old was crossing the street in a wheelchair, when he was struck and killed by a pickup truck Monday night, police say.

PATCHOGUE, NY — A homeless man in a wheelchair was struck and killed by a car while crossing the street in Patchogue on Monday night, according to Suffolk County Police. Harold Ferreri, 62, was in his wheelchair crossing Waverly Avenue, 200 feet south of Gateway Boulevard, when he was hit by a 2003 Dodge Ram Pickup at 8:40 p.m.

The car was being driven by 45-year-old Santiago Diaz, of Central Islip. Following the crash, Ferreri was transported to Long Island Community Hospital in East Patchogue where he was pronounced dead. Diaz stayed at the scene and was uninjured. The vehicle was impounded for a safety check.
