Medford Man Charged With DWI After Crashing SUV Into Construction Site In Brookhaven: Police

BROOKHAVEN, NY — A Medford man was arrested Thursday night in Brookhaven on a charge of driving while intoxicated after crashing his SUV into a construction vehicle in a construction zone, Suffolk police said.

The 48-year-old man was driving a 2026 Hyundai Tucson westbound on Sunrise Highway between exits 57 and 58, when his vehicle went inside a closed construction zone in the right lane and struck the driver’s side of an unoccupied construction vehicle, hitting the fuel tank and causing a fuel spill on the roadway, at 11:30 p.m., according to police.

The county's Highway Patrol Selective Fatality Enforcement Team, and Motor Carrier Safety Section responded to investigate the crash, police said.

The Department of Environmental Conservation responded to assess the fuel leak, according to police.

The roadway was closed for around four hours for cleanup and the crash investigation, police said.

Six construction workers, who were on the scene at the time of the crash, were not hurt, according to police.

The man, who was not injured in the crash, was also issued a traffic ticket for violation of the New York State Move Over Law, police said. He is scheduled to be arraigned at First District Court in Central Islip Friday morning. It is not clear if he has legal representation.
