PATCHOGUE, NY - From Patchogue-Medford School District: The keyboard lab at Patchogue-Medford High School was created about 10 years ago for the music theory and Advanced Placement music theory classes. This past summer the lab was refurbished with 88 new Yamaha electric keyboards, new desks and chairs as the program expanded.
These are two courses primarily for students interested in pursuing music as a career, or want to gain a deeper knowledge in how music works.
About six years ago, piano one and piano two courses began and students in all high school grade levels have gravitated towards this area of study ever since.

“It is really a wonderfully rewarding experience to open up the world of music to both the students who have participated in the music department since fourth grade, as well as those students who are new to our department,” said Stephen Mahr, piano and music theory teacher at Patchogue-Medford High School. “It is my hope that in some small way I have changed my student’s understanding of and developed a deeper love for music that will stay with them throughout their lives.”
Added Mark Stuckey, Director of Art, Music and Cultural Arts: “We are excited of the possibilities this music lab can offer the students of our community. With the advancements in technology and our course offerings, we hope to provide more opportunities to explore the creativity of the 21st century learner.”
