From Patchogue-Medford High School:Patchogue-Medford High School science teacher, Dr. Jennifer Gatz, has been selected as one of 10 secondary teachers from the New York region for a STEM teaching fellowship.
The fellowship is a collaboration between the STEM Leadership Center, Regeneron Pharmaceuticals, Teachers College of Columbia University and NASA Endeavor through U.S. Satellite Laboratory. pre
At the end of the program when Dr. Gatz, who teaches AP biology and capstone, completes a two-week biomedical engineering research component with Regeneron, she will receive a NASA Endeavor STEM Leadership Certificate.
The STEM Teaching Fellowship is designed to give science teachers the tools to deliver higher quality instruction based on Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) and real-world applications. This 16-month program consists of graduate coursework leading to a nine-credit Leadership Certificate from Teachers College, Columbia University, and a two-week laboratory research mentorship at Regeneron’s Tarrytown, NY labs. New to the program for 2018 is a Day of Service in which Regeneron scientists are deployed into Fellow’s classroom to lead science activities that mimic the work conducted in the professional laboratory setting.
“By training these teachers, we have an opportunity to enrich STEM teaching and learning for thousands of students in our region with the goal to ignite interest and inspire more careers in science and engineering,” said Lawrence Perretto, Executive Director of the STEM Leadership Center, in a statement. “We are thrilled to partner with Regeneron for a fourth year to deliver this ground-breaking STEM Teaching Fellowship program to ten more teachers.”
