Patchogue Implements New Veterans Only Parking Spots
New signs that indicate specific parking spots for veterans have been installed last month at parking lots across Patchogue Village.

PATCHOGUE, NY - New "veterans only" parking signs have recently been installed in Patchogue Village parking lots.
Last month, Patchogue VFW commander Dave Rogers contacted Patchogue Deputy Mayor and parking commissioner Jack Krieger and asked him for help in installing signs around the village to encourage residents to leave the space open for veterans.
There are about 10 signs in parking lots located across the downtown area of village including near the American Legion building, behind the library, the Patchogue Theatre, behind the barbecue and more.

Rogers told Patch that he wanted to signs to help bring attention to the fact that veterans live amongst us, more than we know.
According to Rogers, he estimates that around 250 to 300 veterans live in Patchogue alone. In all of Suffolk County, which has the largest population of veterans in all of New York, a total of about 80,000 residents are veterans.

"Twenty-two veterans a day commit suicide due to depression and PTSD, so having that emotional support from the community really helps," he said.
Since Patchogue is the first Suffolk village to implement these new signs, Rogers is hoping to expand to other nearby communities.
However, Patchogue is definitely a good place to start.
"Patchogue has always been in support of veterans," Krieger said.
So far, residents seem to be in support of this new initiative.

Krieger mentioned that he noticed when walking across the village recently that weren't being used, which means that residents are respecting that the spots are for veterans only.
Rogers has also received positive feedback, receiving thank you emails for veterans.
In addition, two people called and apologize for using the spot and later noticing it was the new veteran's parking.
"Feedback has been very positive, people have been very supportive," Rogers said.
