River Students Prepare For Great Arctic STEM Challenge

Students read about a group of scientists that set out to explore the arctic circle.

From Pat-Med Schools: River Elementary students read about a group of scientists that set out to explore the arctic circle. Unbeknownst to them, a great and violent blizzard was moving in turning what was to be an exciting adventure into a disastrous expedition.

The first of the four challenges was the igloo challenge. The students had an amazing time designing and engineering their igloos with limited but fun materials (marshmallows and toothpicks) and very specific guidelines.

Students were also challenged to create a snowball shooter to scare away polar bears on the Arctic tundra. They made lookout towers after surviving a giant avalanche and made a roller coaster so they could make their way quickly down the snow packed mountain to safety.

"Our students worked together in their design teams to build structures," said River Principal, Dr. Tania Davenport-Dalley. "They were immersed in science, technology, engineering and math!"

Dr. Davenport-Dalley wants to give a special thank you to all of the parents who saw this as a worthwhile event to bring their children too, and to the students who persevered through each challenge while having a blast.
