Stolen American Revolutionary War Marker Returned To Patchogue Cemetery Will Be Rededicated
It honors war hero, the Culper Spy Ring's Captain Austin Roe, who transported intelligence between LI and the Continental Army.

PATCHOGUE, NY — A historic Children of the American Revolution marker, honoring Culper Spy Ring courier, Captain Austin Roe, that was stolen from Cedar Grove Cemetery in Patchogue, and returned, will be rededicated in a ceremony on April 19.
Roe, known historically as a Setauket tavern owner, served as a trusted courier — carrying critical intelligence — for General George Washington through the spy ring, transporting intelligence between Long Island and the Continental Army during the American Revolution.
The marker was stolen sometime after 2021, but later resurfaced when it was purchased at an antique sale and brought to the Greater Patchogue Historical Society, the society said.
