Suffolk Working To Restore Gunshot Detection Technology: Report

The Legislature could vote as early as next month, officials told Newsday.

YAPHANK, NY — Suffolk officials have plans to bring back ShotSpotter, or other technology to detects gunshots, in several communities, following a new report which found it could help police respond to shootings, according to a report in Newsday.

In a June 10 report to the county's Legislature, Police Commissioner Rodney Harrison said the technology yields quicker results with dispatch and police unit response times to incidents involving gunfire, the outlet reported. There will be a vote on about $1.6 million in funding for as soon as next the technology as soon as one month, officials told the outlet.

District Attorney Ray Tierney told the outlet that the technology will be deployed in Tierney said ShotSpotter should be deployed in North Amityville, Huntington Station, Wyandanch, Bay Shore, Central Islip, Brentwood, Mastic-Shirley, Coram, and North Bellport.
