Terry Road Residents to Canz: Can't They Park Somewhere Else?

Residents attempting to use traffic cones to block patrons from parking receive citations from Town.

For residents of Terry Road that live near the new (Canz), at 388 Route 112 in Patchogue, the sports-bar themed restaurant is a departure from the recently closed that used to be at the location.

Several Terry Road residents say Canz customers are speeding down the street, texting while driving and parking in front of their homes.

According to manager Jeanne Repetti, the restaurant has opened to numbers that "far exceeded their expectations.” In comparison, the South Shore Restaurant was considered quiet residents said.

Canz has two entrances: Terry Road, a dead end road located on the north side of the restaurant, and its main entrance on Route 112. A third entrance on Lincoln Rd. has been roped off, because, according to Repetti, managers feared that because the road is not a dead end it had the potential to become a thoroughfare for people who know the area.

Resident Anthony Hilliard believes patrons are bypassing the valet parking system in order to leave the restaurant inebriated.

Valet parking is done only on the busiest days, Thursday, Friday and Saturday, according to Repetti, who put the system in place in order to encourage people to park in their lot instead of in the neighboring streets. Repetti was unsure exactly how many spaces the lot holds.

To curb some of the unwelcomed curbside parking, residents put garbage cans and safety cones on the curbs just in front of their property. Residents were quickly given letters by Brookhaven Town, which said they were "obstructing a right of way" and would be ticketed for failure to remove the obstructions.

As of the restaurant’s third weekend in business, one resident had refused to take their safety cones down and has added a "no parking" sign.

Canz manager Jeanne Repetti said the restaurant staff are told to park only in the nearby  or lots where agreements have been made so staff would not park on Terry Road.

"We don't want to upset our neighbors," Repetti said. She said that the restaurant gave Terry Road residents a $50 gift certificate and business card, asking them to call her with concerns.

For resident Jeff Rimland there just isn't enough space for the restaurant’s customers and his three cars, two of which he parks in the street.

"There's nothing I can do to deter them," Rimland said.

The popular, new restaurant will likely continue to bring cars to Terry Road, no matter what the measures residents or Canz staff execute.

However, when Canz's parking lot is full patrons do have the choice to park in the nearby Pathmark or Raymour parking lots or use the valet service instead of parking on the street.
