Two Oregon Middle School Students Receive Long Island Rail Road Safety Awards
Genesi Gillard and Jessica Knox Win School Safety Backpack Contest
MEDFORD, NEW YORK—Two Oregon Middle School eighth graders won the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) 2025–2026 School Safety Backpack Contest. To celebrate, Oregon welcomed LIRR representatives and law enforcement, and LIRR President and Patchogue-Medford School District alumnus Robert Free presented Genesi Gillard and Jessica Knox with their awards and backpacks inspired by their illustrations.
“We are proud to cultivate our students’ artistic skills while teaching them about our transportation system and the importance of promoting safe behavior,” said Lori Cannetti, interim superintendent of the Patchogue-Medford School District.
Oregon Middle School students in Haley Wood’s health and wellness classes participated in the annual LIRR Safety Contest, showcasing their artistic expression and talent. Genesi’s and Jessica’s drawings were then selected as winning illustrations.
