Yaphank Historical Society Gets Grant For Gerard-Homan House Restoration
The David Lion Gardiner Foundation has awarded around $23,000 in matching funds to undertake some work at the home.

YAPHANK, NY — The Yaphank Historical Society has been awarded around $23,000 in matching funds to help with the continued preservation of the historic Gerard-Homan house, according to its winter newsletter.
The award was formally presented to the society in a ceremony at the Ketcham Inn in Center Moriches last month.
The home, which is being interpreted as the mill owner’s home as it was in 1825, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, according to the group's website.

The house is described as "a unique example of transitional federal and Greek Revival architecture and the preservation of this early Long Island home is an integral part of the history and culture of Yaphank," the website states.
The house and mill complex was first noted in Brookhaven Town Records in 1762 when the sawmill was built there on the river next to the house, according to the historical society. It was rebuilt in the federal style in 1790 and the ownership was transferred over the years to the Homan, Hawkins, and Gerard families, the group states on its website.
