The Rockland Conservatory of Music welcomes renowned harpist and harp teacher Tara Hooker to the Faculty roster as it begins its new Harp program at the school. Tara will teach individual lessons at the Conservatory’s new facility at 45 South Main Street in the heart of Pearl River, NY. Student harp rentals will be available as well.
Any student of any age, wanting to study harp, should call RCM’s office at 845.356.1522 x5 for more information.
Hooker began her harp studies at the age of six in Bronxville, New York, and began performing at seven, winning many competitions in the United States and abroad. She received her bachelor’s degree from Iona College, where she minored in music, and her Master’s Degree of Science in teaching from Fordham University.

Her harp teacher and mentor, Geraldine Ruegg continues to be a very positive influence in her life. Tara performs regularly at weddings and parties at venues such as the Plaza and the Waldorf as well as private halls throughout the tri-state area.
Rockland Conservatory Executive Director Marigene Kettler said they have wanted to offer the harp for a long time.

“Since our move, the school’s visibility has increased, and so have the inquiries on harp lessons," Kettler said. "It was fantastic to find that Tara, an extraordinary educator and performer lives locally. With her vast experience, she is the perfect teacher to launch what will be a very popular instrument at RCM."
Kettler said that depending on how quickly it takes off, RCM may add an early childhood group harp program which could expand to groups of adult and senior learners as well.
Hooker’s love of children and passion for teaching has helped her to encourage her students to reach for the stars. Her high expectations and patience help each student to perform comfortably.
“I adapt each lesson to meet the needs and abilities of that student,” she said.
A former elementary teacher in Edgemont and Pleasantville, the experience of teaching has given her the background to teach the harp professionally. Hooker’s harp students are prize winners and have gone on to perform at Carnegie Hall.
“I am excited to be part of the faculty at the Rockland Conservatory," She said. "I look forward to working with its staff and being part of a very talented and diverse faculty. I believe the harp will be a very desirable addition to the Conservatory’s offerings.”
