Pearl River Board Of Education Discusses Polling Personnel, Committee Appointments

Pearl River Superintendent of Schools Dr. John Morgano pointed out that Take Your Child to Work Day conflicts with a state testing day.

It might be a little more than a month until the May 15th budget and school board vote, but the district is gearing up for the elections.

At Tuesday night’s Board of Education meeting, the board voted to appoint its poll personnel, who will run the voting on May 15th from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. at Pirate Cove at Pearl River Middle School.

Voted in were two inspectors, who stand in front the machine and help you place your ballot, a head clerk, who helps you if you have an issue with your registration, and 12 assistant clerks, who work on the books.

“All of these folks worked with us last year and did a great job, so we’re happy to have them back,” said District Clerk Mary Flanagan.

Other things discussed at Tuesday’s meeting:

  • The board voted in two more appointees for the 2011-2012 Committee on Special Education & Committee Preschool Special Events. The two are parents who volunteered their time to help out with preschool or special education events in the district.
  • Sue Wheeler, the district's assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction, said they recently pre-screened more than 100 students coming into kindergarten for the Class of 2025.
  • Superintendent of Schools Dr. John Morgano said during his report that April 26th is Take Your Child To Work Day. He said that recently he wrote a letter home to parents telling them not to take their children to work with them that day because April 26 is a state testing day. “There are plenty of times you can take your child to work,” he said. “Don’t do it on a state testing day.”
  • Pearl River High School PTA Co-President Patrice Carrieri will be on the ballot for the two board of education seats up for election May 15, along with incumbents Bruce Bond and Jackie Curtiss.
