White House "I Am an Entrepreneur" event

White House "I Am an Entrepreneur" event 11/28/11

This past Monday, I had the pleasure of joining fellow student leaders from around the country at the White House’s “I Am an Entrepreneur” event.

Sponsored by the Young Entrepreneur Council, Inc. Magazine and MTV, the event brought together more than 150 entrepreneurs from colleges around the country. The purpose of the event was to promote entrepreneurship as a solution to youth unemployment and underemployment. Speakers included business leaders and other successful entrepreneurs.

Grateful to represent Georgetown University, my invitation came as a result of my ongoing initiatives in Rockland County; including the recently established Rockland Roundtable Initiative

So what was the take-away from the event? Aside from serving as a tremendous opportunity to network with other like-minded students, in my opinion, this event set forth a tone that the White House cares about young entrepreneurs because entrepreneurship is how the U.S. is going to maintain its competitive edge over other nations.

Jon Carson, Director of the White House’s Office of Public Engagement stated, “This administration believes in the young people of this country. This administration believes in the entrepreneurs of this country.”

This should come as no suprise to anyone. For as Valerie Jarrett, a senior advisor to President Obama, stated a year ago, “We are the country that is known for creativity and ingenuity, entrepreneurship, education.”

With that, the "I Am an Entrepreneur" event reaffirmed the belief of many including myself, that the future success of America lies in large part, directly through the continued support of initiatives and programs that promote and foster youth creativity, innovation, entrepreneurship, etc.

Humbled to have received an invite to this event, I look forward to continuing to keep you all informed!
