People were evacuated.

UPDATE 2:59 p.m. — A construction crew performing excavation work in a Pearl River street accidentally dug into a 2-inch plastic natural gas distribution main shortly before noon today, according to O&R spokesman Mike Donovan.
The break released a plume of natural gas into the air and prompted public safety officials to order an emergency evacuation of surrounding buildings.
The accident occurred at the corner of Madison and South Main St. in the hamlet. The utility immediately dispatched crews to the scene to make repairs. They were able to shut the gas off by 2:41 p.m. Two gas customers remain out of service until full repairs are completed, Donovan said.
