GoFundMe Campaign Started For Firefighter Who Fell Into Well

It will be a long road to recovery, with multiple surgeries just the beginning.

PEARL RIVER, NY — Matt VanOrden was severely injured when he fell into an abandoned well on West Washington Avenue Dec. 5 and was trapped there for hours as the sun set and the cold deepened.

"The 20-year-old Pearl River, NY volunteer firefighter has been stabilized for now," said the organizers of a GoFundMe campaignon his behalf.

But, though he has already had multiple surgeries, has an extremely long road ahead of him, they said.

Orangetown police said the victim worked for a company that had sent him to inspect the driveway on the property. He was rescued after police were called at 6:23 p.m. Orangetown police, Excelsior Fire Company, Hook and Ladder Company, Pearl River Ambulance Corps, Medic 21, the Orangetown Building Inspector and the Rockland County Technical Rescue Team responded.
