A Great Loss Of A Great School

Nyack College

I suspect that the regular readers of Patch’s Community Corners Articles know that after 60 years of living in Orangetown and more that 50 years in public community service, I am enchanted by the Town of Orangetown. Sometimes, after my second glass of wine during dinner at my favorite Italian Family Restaurant, Del Arte’s In Orangeburg, I refer to Orangetown as a Virtual Flower Garden.

So naturally I am sadden by the loss of one of Orangetown’s glorious flowers, Nyack College.

It was one of three great small Colleges, the smallest, in Orangetown, the others being Dominican College in Blauvelt and St.Thomas Aquinas In Sparkill. They all had something in common. All had religious origins and all contributed to Orangetown’s exceptionalism and its small-town college-family-quality. And all were publicly rated for their individual exceptional academic quality and well earned fantastic regional ratings.

I am not affiliated in anyway, officially or non-officially, whatsoever, with the colleges except that all three rigorously supported all the advances made in human care during the 44 years that I was on the Rockland County Legislature. They were often the sword-point, the van guard, of the movement toward a more enlightened humanitarian County.

I will miss the Nyack College visits I made there to learn and was very enchanted by the beautiful campus overlooking the mighty Hudson River. It was idyllic. I will also miss the College’s Annual Social Justice Celebration. It made a difference
