High School College Fair Helps Students and Parents

Over 90 colleges participated in the Pearl River High School College Fair Tuesday supplying high school students with helpful information on the next step in their education.

Over 90 colleges and universities sent representatives to the Pearl River High School College Fair Tuesday.

The fair, open to all students and parents everywhere free of charge, allowed high school students to gather information to help them with the next step in their education. The fair regularly draws over 500 students and parents.  All of the public SUNY schools were present, as well as several out of state universities and private colleges.

In addition to schools, several banks were there to help students learn about financing their education, and test prep services were there to help students prepare for the dreaded SAT and the ACT.

Students and parents walked from table to table in the high school gymnasium as college representatives explained what made their school unique.  The high school guidance counselors greeted students as they entered, there to answer any questions on the college application process.

“It gives students a chance to get a feel for all of the colleges,” said Katie Delaney, a sophomore at Pearl River High School.  “The information is more organized and you get to actually talk to somebody about it.”

“It’s good to talk to someone who knows what they’re talking about rather than search online for different programs” explained Amelia Marino, senior at PRHS.

Principal Bill Furdon smiled as his students and their families took this great opportunity to talk to men and women from colleges throughout state and the country.

"I wanted to thank (fair organizer) Barbara Kney-Wilson and the PTA group who put this on tonight," Furdon said at Tuesday's board of eduation meeting. "It's a great event. Before I came (to the meeting) at 7:30, we had 570 kids through the door to ask colelges questions and get that information. Barbara is just incredible for the work she did on that."
