"House Party for Water" to Fight Desalination

Rockland Water Coalition benefit featuring David Amram, Tom Chapin and Jeremy Wall, Sept. 28 at 3 pm

The Rockland Water Coalition invites the community to attend their House Party for Water fall fundraiser being held on September 28 @ 3pm in Pomona, N.Y. This exciting event will feature great food and live performances from guest artists David Amram, Tom Chapin and Jeremy Wall. Attendees also will get a chance to take a tour of Rockland’s coolest energy efficient/geothermal house, designed for community events like this one.

This eco-friendly event is a benefit for the Rockland Water Coalition to help raise much needed funds to fight desalination.

Thousands of residents already have signed petitions, attended hearings and submitted comments to express their opposition to the proposed desalination project. Residents are concerned about health risks, as the proposed desalination plant will be drawing water from the Hudson River just 3.5 miles downstream from Indian Point nuclear power plant. The plant is currently leaking radioactive material into the river. Desalination also threatens the Haverstraw Bay, a crucial nursery for many fish species in the Hudson. Being highly energy intensive, a desalination plant would result in higher water bills and electric bills, and contribute to global warming.

Event organizer Jacqui Drechsler urges, “pay now to ensure we win this David vs. Goliath battle against Suez/United Water, or we will pay later with even higher water bills in the future.”
