Local Student Named Pop Warner All American Scholar Athlete

The annual scholar program recognizes the top student-athletes participating in Pop Warner nationwide.

Player Sebastian Leone, of Blauvelt, NY, was recently recognized by Pop Warner Little Scholars, Inc., the nation’s oldest youth football, cheerleading and dance organization, for his accomplishments in the classroom and in the community.

Sebastian, who plays middle linebacker, guard and kicker for the Orangetown Patriot team, was selected as a Pop Warner Second Team All-American Scholar in April 2017, a program recognizing the nation’s top student-athletes. In 2017, more than 6,100 scholars qualified for the Pop Warner All-American Scholar program, representing the top 2 percent of all scholar-athletes across the country.

The Pop Warner All-American Scholar Program requires a minimum 96 percent grade point average to apply, and students are ranked by grade level (5 th , 6 th , 7 th & 8 th and Above) using a scoring system determined by GPA and community service involvement.

Sebastian, along with his fellow athlete scholars, were honored at the annual Pop Warner All-American Scholar Weekend, which took place this past Memorial Day weekend in Philadelphia. The event featured two Tribute to Scholars events, followed by a formal dinner banquet. The banquet recognizes the scholar-athletes as well as deserving sports professionals who have contributed to the advancement of academics and athletics. This year’s honorees were NFL Alum Mike Golic of ESPN’s Mike & Mike Show, Philadelphia Eagles’ Guard Brandon Brooks and New England Patriot Super Bowl Champion Left Tackle Nate Solder.

Sebastian will be returning to the Orangetown Patriots for his fourth pop warner season, where he plays under his father, Coach Christian Leone, and Coach Michael Sconza.
