UPDATE: Innocent Query Led to False Luring Report in Pearl River

The children had planned a lemonade stand but cancelled it, Orangetown police said.

Orangetown police detectives conducted an investigation into Sunday's report of a suspicious man talking to two children at a party in Pearl River.

In fact, police received a tip about the man's identity -- the description of the man and his car was recognized by one of his customers as someone who works in a store in the Pearl River area.

The customer also told police that he was in the store when local children who frequent the store were advertising that they were going to have a lemonade stand on Mapleshade Avenue.

The children and an involved parent confirmed that they had been planning such a lemonade store but had decided against it at the last minute.

Police said the entire thing was a misunderstanding, that the man had fully cooperated with police, and that there was no threat.

ORIGINAL REPORT: Orangetown police received a report at 5:45 p.m. April 24 about a suspicious incident involving two childen.

Adults at a party on Mapleshade Avenue in Pearl River said a man drove up and asked two kids playing in the driveway for directions to a lemonade stand, and then told them he had spoken to one of the children's sister. He left quickly when an adult started toward the car.

The man was described as a white man with brown hair, possibly in a bun, with a beard and glasses; he was driving a Ford Taurus with New Jersey plates.

Police checked the neighborhood but did not find the car. They ask anyone with information to call the Detective Bureau at 845-359-2121, and they urge parents to talk to their kids about strangers.
