Orangetown Police Help Corral Horse on 303

A horse escaped from its stable in Orangeburg and briefly made its way on to Route 303

Motorists on Route 303 in Orangeburg found themselves facing a surprise early Tuesday morning.

At approximately 5:48, the Orangetown Police received a call that a horse had escaped from its stable off Route 303 in Orangeburg near the former location of Bell-Ans Park.

"It was running around the parking lots of businesses down there with people and trucks coming and going," Orangetown Police Sgt. Thomas Holihan said. "It was a hazard to the horse and to motorists."

According to police, they worked with people from the stable to corral the horse. It briefly made its way on to Route 303, where the pictures attached to this report were taken by resident John Dalto, before they were able to safely catch the horse and return him to his stable.

"It took a little doing," Holihan said. "I'm told the horse was not well. We were able, using police cars and officers on foot, to get it calmed down. They were able to get a bridle on him and lead him back to the stables."

According to police, a veterinarian was called to check on the horse after the incident. There were no accidents or injuries reported due to the horse’s escape.
