Community Corner

Our Hidden, Invisible Neighbors

At A Greater Risk

Rockland is the second geographically smallest County in New York State.

It has a rich history of “Congregate Living Facilities", manifested in the past by two of the largest State institutions in the world for victims of brain related maladies and many huge non-government, not-for-profit orphanages.

Letchworth hosted 5,500 residents & Rockland Psychiatric Center had PC 9,500 patients.

Some examples of the orphanage are St. Agatha's, St. Dominic's & St. Agnes.

Today’s “Congregate Living” facilities are, as a product of the anti-institutionalization movement of the 60’s & 70’s, “not-for- profit” Community Residences like ARC, Camp Venture, Loeb House & Jawonio, which replaced the thousands of “Special Needs” folks on isolated campuses into family sized homes integrated into the community. And the “orphanages” have been replaced also with Foster Care and other more personalized resources.

It goes without saying, both the residents and their Staffs In these Community Residences that replaced the Mega sizes State institutions are more vulnerable than the average healthy family for obvious reasons.

Ergo, I am asking our State Government to pay more attention to this population, our unseen invisible neighbors, with all the equipment required to avoid infection and extra dollars for other necessities and I hope everyone will also help in any way possible.

The Staff should also be considered as our Front Line Heroes.
