PEARL RIVER FARMERS’ MARKET
MARKET NEWS - FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 19TH
We’ve been lucky to continue with the nice warm days, but you only need to venture outside early morning or at night to realize fall has arrived. Time to salvage all those green tomatoes left in the garden (we have a recipe for you) and tend to the pumpkin patch. It’s not too late to plant lettuce and spinach to harvest before the weather gets cold, but if you don’t have the time, our farms have a wonderful array of late summer and early fall produce and potted plants. You’ll notice in the coming weeks that summer treats like peaches, tomatoes, and corn will be replaced by apples, pears, squashes, cabbages, and greens. While we certainly encourage you to freeze or can for winter storage, farmers’ markets are a good guide for those who eat seasonally. Haven’t we all been tempted by a brilliant red strawberry supermarket display in January, only to discover at home they taste like wet cotton?
Our Market will close for the season on October 31st, but our neighbors in Nyack and Ramsey will continue to feature goods from local producers throughout the winter at their indoor markets (information to follow). Come help us celebrate the harvest every Friday until then, from 9am-2pm at The River, 253 Ehrhardt Road (cross street Van Wormer) in the church parking lot. We are working hard to prepare for next season. The Market was started by two Pearl River moms who wanted to improve the availability of fresh, locally produced foods and produce and it takes several volunteers each week to run activities and set up and break down the Market. Operating costs include a small salary for our Market Manager, advertising, entertainment, and crafts. We will be fundraising for next year in the coming months and hope to see some of the familiar faces we see each week at our events. We also have many sponsor levels available, ranging from individuals to small businesses and corporations. If you are interested in being a sponsor or volunteer, there is a link below to our website.
