Pearl River High School Graduate Awarded Police Scholarship

She plans to pursue a career in law enforcement forensics.

PEARL RIVER, NY — Fiona McIntyre of Orangeburg has been awarded the Edward J. Kiernan Memorial Scholarship by the International Union of Police Associations. A graduate of Pearl River High School, McIntyre wants to pursue a career in law enforcement forensics.

The daughter of David McIntyre, a member of the Yonkers Police Benevolent Association, she will attend Loyola University.

The Yonkers PBA is an affiliate of the International Union of Police Associations. Every year, the IUPA selects promising students who demonstrate academic excellence coupled with the desire to pursue studies and careers within the law enforcement field in order to assist them with the costs of attending an academic institution.

“On behalf of the membership of the Yonkers Police Benevolent Association, I praise Ms. Fiona McIntyre on this most prestigious accomplishment and honor," the president of Yonkers Police Benevolent Association, Keith Olson, said in a statement. "I commend her on her choice of Law Enforcement as a career.”

The Edward J. Kiernan Memorial Scholarship was established in 1999 by Sam A. Cabral, IUPA’s International President, to honor Edward J. Kiernan, a New York City police officer and former IUPA president, in recognition of Kiernan's long commitment to the improvement of law enforcement officers’ and their families’ lives.

“The future of America rests in the hands of young people who choose to serve the public interest, public safety being one of the most perilous and honorable among those," Cabral said. "We have an obligation to future generations to support these young people who select such noble paths.”

To qualify for a Kiernan scholarship, an applicant’s parent or guardian must be a member of an affiliate of the IUPA. The applicant must also be accepted at an accredited university or college in a course of study in law enforcement, labor relations, or a related field. He or she must submit a transcript as well as their SAT scores and a letter of recommendation by an official from the applicant’s school.
