Pearl River School Board Presents Tenure Candidates

The board also answered questions regarding the upcoming vote May 17.

Pearl River Superintendent of Schools Dr. Frank Auriemma said there are three days in the school year that always stand out to him -- the first day of school, inductions into the National Honor Society and presenting new tenure candidates.

Tuesday was the third of those events, with Auriemma presenting six teachers and one principal as tenure candidates as part of Tuesday's board of education meeting.

"In Pearl River, tenure is not a given. It is something you earn," Auriemma said.

The meeting agenda called for another hearing on the 2011-2012 budget, but that was not necessary because there were no changes from the previous presentation of the budget. The vote is set for May 17.

The board did discuss policy #4321.9, which relates to access to to Individualized Education Programs, Individualized Education Services Programs and Services Plans of students, particularly with teachers. It was tabled last week to sort out how best to deal with informing substitute teachers. Assistant Superintendent Dr. John Morgano said that it would be possible to share the pertinent information with substitute special ed. teachers.

All five members of the board said that was acceptable, including Thomas DePrisco, who had argued for informing substitute teachers at the previous meeting. The second and final reading of the policy is rescheduled for the next board meeting.
