n 2012, the Rockland U-10 ladies took home the inaugural Gaelic4Girls League Championship. This year, due to the large number of girls that are participating, the U-10 ladies were divided into two teams – the “whites” and the “greens”– a credit to the commitment of the ladies and their parents. While the girls were divided for the benefit of the League, the ladies remained a united Rockland which was demonstrated by the large number of girls who cheered on their counterparts as they challenged St. Brigid’s and the Shannon Gaels.
The morning of Saturday, September 7, manager Tony Donnelly lead the Rockland U-10 girls “green” team out onto the field at the Rockland Center of Excellence to defend the Gaelic4Girls League Championship. The ladies were challenged by the Shannon Gaels – who themselves were feeling confident due to their semi-final win over the “whites” as well as a close loss to the Rockland Shamrocks in the CYC semi-finals. However, on this day, the Rockland side would not be denied.
Rockland came out on top 08-03 to 00-00 as Julia Conroy scored 4 goals, Julie Fitzgerald added a goal and 2 points; Meg McLaughlin added a goal and a point, and Aine Keaney scored a point. The defense was like a brick wall – anchored by tremendous games by Grace Lynch, Catherine Lynch, and Orlaith Donnelly. Saoirse Donnelly and Madison O’Hare were fantastic in goal and significant contributions were made by Alannah Donohoe, Sarah Donohoe, Tara Bane, Casey Tyer and Maggie Glynn. After the final whistle, the League Championship Cup was proudly lifted by team captain Grace Lynch.
Congratulations Rockland!
