Rockland Had 4 Of 20 Top Coronavirus Hot Spots Thursday: Cuomo

The governor's Red Zone restrictions went into effect Friday in central Rockland County.

ROCKLAND COUNTY, NY — The day that restrictions went into effect in that part of Rockland that has the highest density of active coronavirus cases, the county had a high enough case count to take four of the top 20 slots on Gov. Andrew Cuomo's hot spot list.

That's the list of communities in New York state with the highest positivity rates. Since Cuomo began publishing it two weeks ago, Orange and Rockland county neighborhoods have consistently topped the list, which is predominantly made up of neighborhoods in Brooklyn and Queens.

The list published by the state health department Friday includes four hot spots in Rockland.

On Thursday, 145 people in Rockland County tested positive for the coronavirus, state health officials reported. Over the past 14 days, the positivity rate in the county's hot spots has been:

  • Monsey (10952) - 14 percent
  • Spring Valley (10977) - 12.6 percent
  • Suffern (10901) - 6 percent
  • New City (10956) - 3.1 percent

Neighborhoods there are part of Rockland's red zone, where 14 days of quarantine restrictions have been imposed on schools, businesses and mass gatherings.

In his news briefing Friday, Cuomo pointed out that the six hot spots on which quarantine restrictions have been imposed make up just 2.6 percent of New York's population but account for 20 percent of its coronavirus cases.

The rest of New York had a positivity rate of 0.9 percent Thursday, he said. The Hudson Valley region had a positivity rate of 2.1 percent, due to the outbreaks in Orange and Rockland counties.
