Second Thoughts About Our Criminal Laws

Why did we eliminate the sentence of "life without parole" ?

I bring this question, this issue, this topic of conversation, to our Patch readers totally free of any partisan politics from any perspective. It should also be clear that I am not a supporter of the death sentence. I am for stronger consideration for the loved ones of deliberate cruel violent odious vicious heinous murder victims vis a vis parole.

Who am I to raise the issue and why now ?

It is because of the recent paroles of two killers found guilty of such murders that has affected two Orangetown residents.

In one example the paroled killer murdered and raped two mothers in front of their two very young children and laughed about it. One Mother was shot 9 times and the other 3 times. And he was heard laughing as he ran away.

Moreover, he never expressed repentance until very late knowing it would influenced the Parole Board. Before that he consistent changed his story.

In the other case, the killer murdered a 16 year old girl after failing to successfully sexually assault her. He killed her by crushing her skull with rocks and stabbing her multiple times. He also never expressed repentance until very late for parole purposes. He also kept changing his story.

In both cases, these killers were sentenced to 25 years to life with the possibility of parole. In both cases they served more than 25 years. In both cases they will be free and still young enough to enjoy the rest of their lives. In both cases the mother of the 16 year old girl and the children of the two mothers will know that they are free to enjoy life. I leave it up to my readers to try and imagine their feelings and fears.

Ergo, I think that the next session of the New York State Legislature should rethink "Life Without Parole". If you agree, please talk to your incumbents or candidates about it..
