The Order Sons of Italy in America (OSIA) is the oldest and largest fraternal organization of Italian American men and women on the North American Continent. It was established on June 22, 1905 in New York City. The organization was originally created to assist Italian immigrants seeking to assimilate and to become educated. OSIA has provided a community in which men and women of Italian descent have preserved and nurtured their Italian heritage. In any given year, the New York OSIA, through the New York Grand Lodge Foundation, Inc. and the local lodges, provide approximately $250,000 in scholarships. While many local lodges sponsor their own programs, the New York Grand Lodge Foundation, Inc. has an overall state competitive scholarship process in place since 1982. The funds for the Foundation scholarship endowment, which now hovers near $1 million, has grown substantially due to the generosity of individual lodges, members of OSIA, as well as benefactors and friends. Promoting, encouraging and supporting scholarship and grant assistance has been the core piece of OSIA’s efforts to honor young collegians in their academic pursuits.
Individuals are encouraged to find out more about the organization by seeking out their local Lodge of which there are more than 60 throughout New York State. A list can be found here. Activities of the lodges vary but often include weekly or monthly meetings, fairs, fundraising dances and events, and more.
