STAC Collects Books for Grandview Elementary, Read-In Scheduled for May 15

STAC organizes book collection and read-in to support struggling district.

(Sparkill, NY—May 11, 2015) – Dr. Michael Shaw, professor of education at St. Thomas Aquinas College and president of the Rockland Reading Council Rockland Reading Council, organized the First Annual Children’s Book Collection to donate books to Grandview Elementary (East Ramapo, NY), a high-needs district that needs support to raise literacy achievement. St. Thomas Aquinas College faculty, employees and students collected more than 30 cartons of books for the initiative.

On Friday, May 15, 2015 at 9:00 a.m. Dr. Shaw and student members of the Rockland Reading Council will formally present the books to the principal of Grandview Elementary, Mrs. Patricia Smith, for distribution to classrooms and the school library. The students will then conduct a Read-In by reading aloud to classes and focusing on comprehension by addressing Common Core Standards.

Dr. Shaw said, “I am so pleased with the very successful book collection. STAC has a strong partnership with Grandview, including accepting students into a summer literacy program and five STAC graduates teach there. As we all know, East Ramapo is a beleaguered District that has many needs. Our initiative demonstrates that we can make a positive impact.”
