ORANGEBURG, NY — Employees at Nice-Pak in Orangeburg took a day in June to focus on volunteer activities and make a difference in the community.

For their first annual event, they joined forces with workers at sister company PDI, which was celebrating its ninth annual "Be the Difference" Day June 18.

Both are international companies, and because of their products they were working flat out at the height of the new coronavirus outbreak. PDI manufactures infection prevention products and solutions, and Nice-Pak manufactures wet wipes.

In the Hudson Valley, PDI and Nice-Pak associates working remotely devoted time to causes they were passionate about. Associates participated in a wide range of volunteer activities, including donating used books to a local library, cleaning up trash in a neighborhood or nearby park, volunteering at a soup kitchen, bringing blankets to a homeless shelter, mowing an elderly neighbor’s lawn, fostering shelter animals, and organizing a collection for food pantries.

And that's while Nice-Pak was operating around the clock to produce essential sanitizing products to fight the new coronavirus.

“These last few months have presented us with tremendous challenges but also extraordinary opportunities to give back,” said Robert P. Julius, Chief Executive Officer, Nice-Pak. “We wanted to give our associates, working both in our facilities and remotely, the opportunity to do something meaningful for their local communities and organizations during this unprecedented time."

At PDI’s Orangeburg manufacturing plant, associates assembled 850 “Blizzard Bags” for the Rockland County-based Meals On Wheels organization. The bags contained a full day’s supply of nonperishable food, including tuna fish, soup, almond milk, cereal, apple juice and diced fruit and are used for homebound Rockland County residents.

PDI Associates and some of their family members also came together to clean up the reservoir and the grounds of Silver Rock Equine Therapy Farm in Pearl River. The group filled six contractor bags with cans, bottles, various plastics, sporting equipment, and other miscellaneous discarded containers that were found surrounding the perimeter of the reservoir.

"We were thrilled to be able to give back to the Rockland County community and clean up debris like bottles, cans, and plastic items left behind by people outdoors, that could negatively affect the wildlife in the area," said Kathy O'Sullivan, Senior Director Regulatory Affairs with PDI.

Nice-Pak is headquartered in Rockland County. PDI is headquartered in Woodcliff Lake, New Jersey, and has a plant in Orangeburg.

“Our associates look forward to the annual tradition of giving back to the community, and by partnering with Nice-Pak and their “Nice-Pak Proud” event, we are able to have an even bigger impact for those in need," said Zachary T. Julius, Chief Executive Officer, PDI.
