Violent Storm Brings Fire, Flooding, Down Trees And Wires

UPDATE: At 10:30 p.m. there are 431 O&R customers without power in Rockland County.

The violent storm that swept into Rockland County this afternoon brought with it fierce rain and winds that have created flooding conditions, brought down trees and wires and a possible lightning strike led to a fire that heavily damaged an Upper Nyack Home.

Traffic on the New York State Thruway is extremely heavy in both directions, and two lanes of the road were shut for a large tree that fell on a car on the Thruway.

- A large tree fells across Route 9W at Christian Herald Road in Upper Nyack, hitting a car. The occupant were uninjured an able to get out on their own.

- A fire on Route 9W in Upper Grandview has led police to shut Route 9W in the area.

- A portion of roadway on Route 9W in South Nyack has buckled.

- Route 303 at Mountainview Avenue in Orangeburg is flooded.

- Flooding has also been reported in part of New City.

- A section of the Palisades Interstate Parkway in New City was closed northbound because of an accident.

- Piermont firefighters responded to an emergency call of a boat in distress on the Hudson River.

- Firefighters in Valley Cottage assisted the owner of a car that was caught in flood waters in a shopping center on Route 303 in Valley Cottage.

The Orange and Rockland Utilities Storm Center reports 554 customers in Rockland County are without power as of 5:30 p.m. More than 200 customers are without power in Clarkstown, about 100 in Nyack and about 100 in Orangetown.
