2 Unions Start Recruiting Apprentices In November

PEEKSKILL, NY — Two unions will be recruiting apprentices from around the Hudson Valley, as well as other regions in New York. There's one drive about to begin for 20-25 sprinkler fitter apprentices, and a drive about to start for four carpenter lather apprentices, state labor department officials announced.

The Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee for Northeast Carpenters Apprenticeship Fund will conduct a recruitment from Nov 5, 2018 through Nov. 1, 2019 for four lather (carpenter) apprentices.

Applications must be obtained in person at the Carpenters Local Union 279, 10 Corporate Park Drive, Hopewell Junction, NY from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday, excluding legal holidays, during the recruitment period.

Applicants should be prepared to take a math and measurement computation test, at the time of application.
Applicants must attest to the qualifications, as listed below, in a signed statement. They must also provide required documents of proof when offered a position. Failure to provide the required proofs will result in immediate dismissal from the program.

The Committee requires that applicants:

  • Must be at least 18 years old. Proof will be required after selection and prior to indenture.
  • Must provide valid photo identification, after selection and prior to indenture.
  • Must have a high school diploma or a high school equivalency diploma (such as GED or TASC). Proof will be required after selection and prior to indenture.
  • Must be physically able to perform the work required of a lather (carpenter), which may include:
    • Lifting and carrying materials that weigh more than 50 pounds.
    • Climbing and working off of scaffolds and ladders at various heights.
    • Working in all types of weather conditions, including extreme heat and cold, rain sleet and direct sunlight.
    • Performing constant repetitive motions.
    • Standing, stooping, and kneeling for prolonged periods of time.
    • Following established safety rules and regulations, and maintaining a safe and clean work environment.
    • Shaping and cutting materials using hand tools, machines, or power saws.
    • Assembling and fastening materials using hand tools, wood screws, nails, dowel pins, or glue.
    • Erecting scaffolding and ladders for assembling structures over ground level.
    • Installing structures and fixtures such as windows, frames and trim or hardware using carpenters hand tools and power tools.
  • Must reside within the jurisdiction of the Northeast Carpenters Apprenticeship Fund, which includes the following counties: Columbia, Dutchess, Orange, Putnam, Rockland, Sullivan, Ulster, and Westchester. Proof will be required after selection and prior to indenture.
  • Must have reliable means of transportation to and from various job sites and related instruction classes across the Hudson Valley.
  • Must pass a drug test, at the expense of the sponsor, after selection and prior to indenture.
  • Must participate in an interview, if selected.
  • Must be willing to attend related instruction at a Northeast Carpenters Apprenticeship Fund Training Facility as required.

Sprinkler Fitters

The Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee for Sprinkler Fitters, Local Union #669, will conduct a recruitment from Nov. 05, 2018 through Nov. 01, 2019 for 20-25 sprinkler fitter apprentices.

The 20-25 openings listed for apprentices represent the total number for four recruitment regions - the Capital District, Central, Hudson Valley, and Western regions of New York.

Applications can be obtained from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday, excluding legal holidays, during the recruitment period. The closest locations are:

  • Latham - Plumbers & Steamfitters LU #7, 18 Avis Drive, Latham, NY 12110.

The Committee requires that applicants:

  • Must be at least 18 years old. Proof will be required after selection and prior to indenture.
  • Must have a high school diploma or a high school equivalency diploma (such as TASC or GED). Proof will be required after selection and prior to indenture.
  • Must be physically able to perform the work of a sprinkler fitter, as determined by a medical examination, at the expense of the sponsor, after selection and prior to indenture.
  • Must pass a drug test, at the expense of the sponsor, after selection and prior to indenture.
  • Must provide DD-214, Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty, if applicable, after selection and prior to indenture.
  • Must be willing to travel to various job sites.
  • Must have reliable transportation to and from various job sites and related instruction classes.

Apprentice programs registered with the Department of Labor must meet standards established by the Commissioner. Under state law, sponsors of programs cannot discriminate against applicants because of race, creed, color, national origin, age, sex, disability, or marital status. Women and minorities are encouraged to submit applications for apprenticeship programs. Sponsors of programs are required to adopt affirmative action plans for the recruitment of women and minorities.
