PEEKSKILL, NY — Lady and the Tramp is a great movie, but Disney might have given us the wrong idea about animal control officers.

In Peekskill, al least, it seems the city's animal control officer spends way more time lending a helping hand to wildlife in pickle than interrupting the choreographed musical numbers of disenchanted house pets.

On Thursday, the Peekskill animal control officer got a phone call reporting a large turtle in distress at the Riverfront Green park. The animal control officer sprang into action to offer a helping hand to the senior snapping turtle who was feeling a bit out of sorts. The officer even contacted his friends at Animal Nation, who responded and took custody of the wayward turtle.

In their custody she will receive veterinary care as well as any necessary rehabilitation.

While this story of half shell heroism has an apparently happy ending, it does make us wonder what else our childhood silver screen tales got wrong about noble vocations. Is it possible that Italian chefs aren't as altruistic with feral dogs in the kitchen as we were led to believe?
