Local man gives back after kids' sight is saved.

Buchanan resident John Hunt knew he would one day join the Lions Club. His father was a Lion, and Hunt admired the work he did in the community.

“I procrastinated,” Hunt said. “I was always so busy with family and work that I put it off.”

Then came the news no parent wants to hear. Hunt’s son Ryan was diagnosed with amblyopia, a condition which can lead to permanent blindness when left untreated. Fortunately, it’s often easily corrected when treated early.

The discovery was made when the Hendrick Hudson Lions Club brought their Pre School Eye Screening program to Ryan’s preschool. The screening is conducted annually at no cost to schools or parents.

“We never knew there was a problem, he had no symptoms.” Hunt said. “We were able to get him corrected, and I took it as a sign that it was time to heed my dad’s advice to do something good for the community.”

Just a few years later, the Lions caught a similar issue in his daughter Emily, who has also been successfully treated.

“I have a very good life and felt like I should do something to give back a little bit. That’s why I’m involved,” Hunt said. “It’s been great. It’s fun working together to make the community a better place.”

To help support their charitable work, including the free preschool eye screening program, the Hendrick Hudson Lions Club is hosting a Clam Bake on Saturday, April 28 at 3 p.m. at the Blue Mountain Park Reservation Lodge on Welcher Avenue in Peekskill, rain or shine.
