Coach Quit After Student Sex Allegation: News Report

Peekskill girls basketball coach Rodney Headley Jr. was suspended in March, resigned in April and surrendered his teachers license in July.

Winning Peekskill High School girls basketball coach Rodney Headley Jr. resigned in April—after a 17-year-old student told authorities she had engaged in a sexual act with him and the district had suspended him and started disciplinary procedures.

A report by The Journal News/lohud.com gives details of his departure gleaned from the settlement agreement and other documents the paper obtained through repeated Freedom of Information requests.

The student was 17, which is the legal age of consent. There are no laws in New York prohibiting sex between teachers and students, the paper said.

Lucian Chalfen of the Westchester County District Attorney’s Office told The Journal News that “we determined that there was no evidence a crime was committed.”

Reporters Mike Zacchio and Lee Higgins found that Headley, 29, surrendered his teaching certificate in July to the New York State Education Department. They also found that Headley, who is working as an assistant coach at the City University of New York, did not tell his new employers about the allegation.
