Cortlandt Appoints New Town Board Member
The vacancy was created when Richard Becker assumed the office of supervisor.

CORTLANDT, NY — A new Town Board member has been appointed in the town of Cortlandt to fill a vacancy.
Supervisor Dr. Richard Becker said Wednesday the board will appoint Robert Mayes at its next meeting Tuesday.
Mayes is a fifth-generation resident of the town, a member of the Planning Board and a twice-elected school board trustee for the Lakeland School District.

He is an attorney working at the state Department of Correction, and prior to that, he was an assistant district attorney in the Westchester County District Attorney's Office.
Mayes is married and has young children. He lives in the Crompond area of town.

He has been involved in a number of civic organizations including as a coach for Cortlandt American Little League, a Cub Scout leader, a board member of the Mt. Pleasant Blythedale Foundation and a member of the Westchester Black Bar Association.
"We welcome Mr. Mayes to the Board and are excited to see how his knowledge and experience will enhance the work of the board for our community and government," Becker said.
Mayes thanked Becker and the board for giving him the opportunity to serve Cortlandt.
"I am looking forward to getting to work on behalf of our community," he said.
The vacancy was created by Becker's election to supervisor.
It was advertised on the town website, social media and other publications.
Fifteen candidates were interviewed by a preliminary committee, and four were interviewed by the entire Town Board. Becker said that many of those interviewed will be asked to serve on various town committees.
