Cortlandt Man Accused of Assault at the Riverfront

The Oct. 19 arrest stems from an Aug. 4 incident.

Cortlandt resident Joseph Velders, 21, faces a charge of 3rd degree assault, a misdemeanor, stemming from an incident in August.

He was arrested Oct. 19 by New York state police after an investigation into the event, which took place at Steamboat Riverfront Park.

On October 19, 2014 at approximately 4:12 p.m., New York State Police from the Cortlandt barracks charged Joseph Velders, 21 years old, of Cortlandt, New York, with Assault 3rd Degree, a Class A Misdemeanor.

At about 10 p.m. Aug. 4, troopers responded to the Steamboat Riverfront Park for a report of an assault.

Police say the victim was at the park talking to his friends when a man only known to him as “Joey” struck him in the face with a closed fist, causing injury. The victim left the park and contacted Westchester County 911 for assistance. The suspect fled before police arrived.

Subsequent to a lengthy investigation, police identified Velders as a suspect.

They got a warrant Sept 28 from the Town of Cortlandt Court. Velders was arrested and charged Oct. 19 and released on an appearance ticket ordering him to appear before the Town of Cortlandt Court on Oct. 24.
