Cortlandt To Mark Bag Ban With Reusable Bag Giveaway

The annual giveaway sponsored by Cortlandt's Conservation Advisory Council is earlier this year because of the state's plastic bag ban.

CORTLANDT, NY — The Cortlandt town Conservation Advisory Council will sponsor its reusuable bag giveaway at ShopRite on Route 6. This year town officials are moving the event to March 1 from Earth Day.

That's because March 1 is the day New York's new law banning single-use plastic bags goes into effect.

The giveaway will start at 10 a.m. and last as long as supplies last.

The Conservation Advisory Council's goal is to put reusable bags in the hands of as many shoppers as possible.

Cortlandt’s Conservation Advisory Council has spent the last several years drawing attention to the impact that single-use plastic shopping bags have on waterways, wildlife, and people's health. The CAC was formed to ensure the preservation and improvement of the quality of the natural and man-made environment in the town in the face of urbanization and the accompanying demands on natural resources.

"The Town of Cortlandt has been deeply committed to the environment and to making sure that the Town and its residents are doing their part to reduce harm to our planet," said Cortlandt Town Supervisor Linda Puglisi. "We applaud New York State for passing this law to ban plastic shopping bags, which pollute our environment and are detrimental to the health of our people and our wildlife. I am proud that our town’s Conservation Advisory Council has taken leadership in helping to educate our community and provide residents with an alternative solution to carrying out their items in plastic."

Gov. Andrew Cuomo signed the bill on Earth Day roughly one year ago.
