PEEKSKILL, NY — When times are tough, heroes emerge. We all know someone who's making a difference right now as we live through unprecedented times. Here at Patch, we've launched an initiative to help recognize these everyday heroes.

This submission comes from Wendy Kelly of Peekskill, who nominated a community group, Kristy Scherer and her Girl Scout Troop 1549.

Scherer and the nine first-graders in her troop donated more than 80 containers of Girl Scout cookies and chocolate to the Peekskill police and the Peekskill Volunteer Ambulance Corps. Plus, they're going to be donating cookies to Fred's Pantry in June. So far they've got 96 boxes to donate, Scherer said.

Why do you believe the nominee should be recognized or honored?

As an “adult Girl Scout” I'm making this nomination during National EMS Week.

What's one thing you want everyone to know about your hero?

I believe in these values. It is so important to give back to our essential workers. This lesson will be with them forever.

Thank you for all that you do, Kristy!
