Hendrick Hudson School Board to Hear Transportation Study Recommendations
Should more students walk to school? The study analyzes ridership, distance, time, walkzones, policies, costs, and efficiencies.

The Board of Education meets Oct. 8 in the Hendrick Hudson High School Library with an executive session first and then the public portion starting at 7:30 p.m.
On the agenda: transportation study updates and recommendations.
One of the bits of information that school trustees, administrators and parents have to ponder is the ridership level in the district’s buses. As the study says, “Empty buses are not good for school business. Neither are overcrowded ones. So Ridership information must be considered for efficiency.”

- HHHS Avg Ridership 46%
- BMMS Avg Ridership 77%
- BVS Avg Ridership 68%
- FGL Avg Ridership 72%
- FWS Avg Ridership 77%
One of the possibilities the study brings up: changing the start time at Furnace Woods School to match the start time at the other two elementary schools.
The study also suggests that district officials consider enforcing the policy for walking distances. About 250 students live within walking distance but receive bus transportation. The upsides include fewer bus trips, more hours custodians can spend in school buildings, healthier kids—and the downsides include complaints, more parents and teens driving to school, and the need for a crossing guard at Frank G. Lindsey School.
